When browsing through different used Toyota engines, there are some things you can have in mind to make the most informed decision possible. First off, you can be quite confident that Toyota engines themselves represent a very high quality brand. However like in all things used, there are usually engines that have been more heavily used than others, and that’s one of the main things to take into account when planning your buy. On this note, the first thing you should inquire, investigate or find out is how much mileage your candidate engine has gone through. Typically USDM engines average 70-100 thousand miles, while engines imported from the JDM have much lower mileage ratings sometimes as low as 35 to 50 thousand miles.

After considering mileage, the next aspect on your checklist should be to find out what parts of the Toyota engine are going to need replacement. Some motors come with everything you need in acceptable conditions, but that’s if you’re lucky. Other motors might come with a perfectly looking and functional long block but with missing components. Find out if you need to replace the following parts: spark plus, pistons, valves, gaskets, intake manifolds, oil pumps and other timing components. With this in mind you can consider a motor with missing parts only if you have enough cash left over to buy the parts you need to complete it.
