Undertsanding Mazda rotary engines: a basic glimpse into this engineering wonder

Getting to know how Mazda rotary engines can give you a closer relationship and appreciate the value of this unique car. As you will learn, used Mazda engines that rely on the rotary mechanism are more reliable than their piston counterparts. Basically speaking, an engine with a rotational mechanism, like the ones found on the Mazda RX-7, consists of a block, an output shaft and a rotor. The beauty of these types of engines is that they efficiently separate the 4 different cycles in the power generating process: intake, compression, combustion and exhaustion. A triangular shaped rotor inside the engine block does this by creating sealed chambers as it spins inside the motor. This moving rotor connects to the moving shaft by means of gears that make it spin around and produce torque.

When you take apart a Mazda rotary engine, setup yourself for a surprise if it’s your first time. Whereas a rotary engine has only two moving parts (the output shaft and the rotor), a conventional piston engine might consist of at least 30 or more moving parts. You can imagine that Mazdas using this type of motor can get away with less maintenance and an overall greater reliability. The main problem with the rotary engine is that it hasn’t gained enough popularity, and few manufacturers, such as Mazda, actually offer them to the auto consumer market.
