VTEC spices Honda motors up to an improved level of performance | |
|
:: Honda motors :: You might notice that some Honda motors come
with something called VTEC technology. A Honda motor that comes
implemented with this valve control mechanism has some advantages when
operating at high RPMs. VTEC is actually an acronym for Variable valve
Timing and lift Electronic Control, and though it sounds really
sophisticated, it’s quite simple to understand. There were basically two
ways Honda applied to get more power out of motors The first and most
obvious method consist in making the engine bigger, thus allowing a
greater displacement for fuel to be burned. Another method for
accomplishing better motor efficiency is to use a turbo that consists in
a forced induction system that compresses air before it gets into the
motor’s cylinder. Honda came up with a cool plan to get more power out of their motors. Instead of incrementing motor size or using engine turbos, Honda decided that turning the engine faster would do the trick. This could be accomplished by supplying optimized air/fuel mixtures into the combustion chamber at higher speeds. This Honda accomplished by electronically controlled valves that open up wider when engines reach a certain RPM. This traduces in faster motors and higher power for those Hondas that come equipped with this smart technology system. That’s why in certain motor swaps you need to adjust wiring and replace the ECU so the car can get the benefits out of its new VTEC engine.
